I have a daughter in the full day kindergarten. She leaves to the bus at 7.30am and comes to home at 3.30pm. Few months ago I started to get overwhelmed with all the home work she was supposed to do almost daily.
I wrote a note to the teacher asking if all this homework is necessary. She wrote back that it is in the guide lines of the class. My daughter started to get tired and unexcited about sitting down and repeating the letters and numbers over and over again. She would even stop bringing the books from the school library because she did not have time to read them with me after her home work was done.
This alarmed me and I called the school and requested a meeting with the teacher. I also discussed about the same issue with other parents in the class. Many of us believed that home work was too much and some parents just refused to make their children to do it all resulting low report cards from unpleased teacher.
After sitting own with the teacher and explaining our daily routine and how all this home work is affecting my child negatively towards learning she understood my view better and after she talked with few other parents the home work load seem to get much smaller.
My girl is once again bringing the books home and does not sound as agitated about the homework time as she did before.
So keep the communication open, don't just tell the teacher that there is too much to do, explain why it is so hard to get it all done!
