The year was 1969. It was early spring and I was pregnant with my first child who was due beginning of September(she actually arrived Aug 31).
I was having a hard time with morning well actually all day sickness so wasn't thrilled to see my neighbor driving down my long driveway. We lived out in the country.
I opened the door to her toating a covered box, realizing that she was crying. I asked what was wrong. She explained that she was driving on a uninhabited road on her way back from her mom's when she came upon a dead cat that had been run over. She stopped to push the poor thing out of the road and realized that there was a kitten being born and you guessed it, inside the box was the dead cat and a kitten still connected to the mom. She had come directly to me because I was close and because she knew I would take care of it. I ran for thread and scizzors then I took the box from her. I tied and cut the cord and handed to baby to her and told her to rub it dry with a towel. I had wanted to be a vet and would doctor all the ill wildlife.
I then went back to mom. I felt the movement inside her stomach. I ran for my husband's skinning knife he used while hunting. I took a big breath and sliced into the stomach. I went through each layer carefully. Mama Kitty had 4 babies. One didn't make it so we buried Mama and baby in my flowerbed and added a package of forget me nots seeds. The other three got feedings every 2 hours then every 3 then 4. Pretty soon they were running around and so cute. I kept one, while my neighbor adopted one and her mom the third.
That was my first rescue as an adult. Through the years I have many more stories of animals that entered my life uninvited but became treasured pets and friends.
