Testimonies: Parents of a stillborn child

by Dino

It was the moment that we both had been waiting for. My wife had gone into labor with our son on March 7, 2007 at 9PM. We had waited what seemed like an eternity for this moment. Her contractions were only 5 minutes apart for well over an hour. After talking to the doctor at 11PM, she advised us to make our way to the Birthing Center. We had been in her office at 7PM that night for our regular weekly exam. The baby was kicking and his heartbeat was strong.

My wife and I loaded up the car with our bags that have been sitting by the door for a month and away we went. Within minutes of us arriving, the nurses, their were three, had us in our room and my wife in the bed. They instantly hooked up a fetal heart monitor to her to try and get a fetal rate strip for insurance purposes. After that they would remove the monitor and check her every hour. This is one of the reasons that we chose the Birthing Center. After an hour and a half and 7 heart monitors later, the three nurses were still unable to get a strong, solid heartbeat. They kept telling my wife and I that everything was fine, that the baby had probably just turned posterior. The three nurses left the room for a few minutes and we were left in wonder. After a few more minutes they had come back and told us that the doctor wants us to stay and for my wife to rest. We were checked in finally at 2AM and we knew it wouldn't be much longer before our precious boy would be here. They offered her a sleeping pill to get some rest, but my wife, being head strong, refused it.

It was now 5AM and m wife was so uncomfortable. She wanted to take a shower. So I helped her into the shower and left her to be alone for a moment. As I returned into the room, a nurse popped her head in to see if everything was okay and if we had gotten any sleep. I explained to her that we hadn't and that my wife was trying to find some comfort in the shower. She said fine and excused herself.

It wasn't until 8:30AM that we had seen anyone again. This time it was the midwife from the doctor's office. After a few minutes of idol chit chat, she wanted to listen to the baby's heartbeat. After only two minutes of trying she thought something might be wrong. She immediately ordered an emergency ultrasound for my wife. We were rushed downstairs to the lab and the technician took us right in. She did her exam and sent us back upstairs not being able to tell us anything.

After we got
