As a varsity high school volleyball player, I have been through my fair share of drills, but there is one drill in particular that has stood out in terms of digging drills.
What you need:
A volleyball court (of course), one ball, and at least 3 players (you use up to 4)
To start, one player stands out of bounds, about even with the three meter line on one side of the net. On the same side, the remaining players lay belly down on the end line.
To begin the drill, the player with the ball slaps the ball to announce the break. At this point, the players on the end-line do 10 push-ups as fast as they can and then sprint under the net and to the opposite side to take their positions. While this takes place, the player with the ball lobs it over at about the time the players are crossing under the net (mimicking a serve). The players are then forced to play the ball quickly and execute a proper pass, set, hit sequence.
Run this drill through a number of times to get best effect.
This is a great drill to work on endurance and quickness for your defense in particular. Being forced to react quickly to a serve the minute they turn around greatly works on digging skills and techniques.
