A guide to Dublin's festivals and special events

Dublin has a variety of festivals and special events taking place throughout the year. Activities include live music, street theatre, dancing, carnivals, markets and fun for the whole family. The list is endless!

Here are a few festivals worth noting:

The Heineken Green Energy Festival is an annual international music festival. It features both Irish and international artists, and takes place at different venues around Dublin. This year, the event will be held April 1 to May 31.

The Taste of Dublin Festival will take place in beautiful Iveagh Gardens from June 14 to June 17. The festival is a celebration of Dublin's finest food and drink. Some of the city's best restaurants and chefs will prepare samples of their most exquisite cuisine and drinks. Visitors will also enjoy performances in comedy, dance, jazz music and theatre.

The Festival Of World Cultures is Ireland's foremost cultural event. It takes place in the town of Dun Laoghaire, a part of the greater Dublin area. The festival presents a diverse program of music, a Global Village Fair, international food market, outdoor concerts, late-night parties, workshops and activities for children. With artists from over 50 countries, the program is sure to have something for everyone. This year, the festival will be held from August 24 to August 26.

The Dublin Fringe Festival is a two week event showcasing dance, music, theatre and visual arts. It's a curated festival, so artists must be chosen to perform during the festival. The festival offers a platform for new Irish artists, as well as providing established artists a place to rejuvenate their work. This year's event will take place from September 8 to September 23.

The International Puppet Festival takes place every September in Dublin. Puppeteers come from around the world to participate in this 9 day event. The festival is sponsored by the Lambert Puppet Theatre of Dublin. The theatre presents puppet shows regularly in Dublin. This year the festival will take place from September 11 to September 19.

The Dublin Theatre Festival will be celebrating it's 50th anniversary in 2007, from September 27 to October 14. The festival is known as the oldest specialist theatre in Europe. Both international and Irish productions are presented during the festival.

Other festivals include: Dublin Toy and Train Fair, Dublin City Soul Festival, The Buitoni Italian Film Festival, Docklands Maritime Festival, Irish Youth Dance Festival, Waltons Guitar Festival of Ireland, Howth Peninsula Festival, Lovebox Dublin, Bulmers International Comedy Festival, Stranger Than Fiction Film Festival and many others. With so many festivals and special events in the Dublin area, there is sure to be something to please everyone.
