Repressed feelings about sexual identity has made it difficult for those uncertain if they are gay to come out of 'the closet'. There are some reasons for this doubt and ways to understand the indecision, so one can be true to their self and get the fullest expression of who they are.
With mainstream media opening the doors wide, it is growing easier for homosexuals to out themselves. What might keep someone in hiding is years of social conditioning by peers who've been taught to take a dim view of anyone who is 'different'. From an early age, our parents and society give us indicators whether our inclinations are right or wrong. This behavior modification process can steer a young one away from homosexual tendencies, fearing the outcome or disapproval of experiencing anything deemed unnatural.
Eventually, this mental programming gets put to the test, giving one doubt about these conditioned preferences. It may be difficult to discern fact from fiction during the awakening, never more so after puberty. And since there is no litmus test to tell a person if they are gay, there is immediately one avenue to pursue...talking it out.
Seeing a clinical therapist is the first step for someone confused about their sexual preference. There may be many scenarios where this doubt manifests itself. It might stem from the difficulty accepting feelings one has for another of the same gender. The sooner these feelings of confusion are openly discussed with a professional, the better the chances of liberating the mind.
So, put away all the jokes about having 'gaydar', the women who wear flannel shirts with short hair, or the men who listen to showtunes and live with cats. Those are stereotypes essentially created by straight people who are threatened by anyone who is different. A gay individual can have the same interests as anyone else. Homosexuals don't have to live underground any longer and adopt lifestyles that send signals to other potential partners that might typify their sexuality.
Being able to tell who is gay may still be difficult, just not for the same reasons.
