Many of us have had difficult bosses in the past. We may find that our bosses don't always have our best interests in mind. At times, they're just flat wrong. When your boss is telling you to do something that you can't do, or know for a fact you shouldn't do, it can leave you in a bind.
Still, going over your boss' head can be a dangerous proposition. You could be fired and left without a decent job history to put on your resume. So what are some tactful ways to bypass his authority without getting yourself in a sling?
By far the best way to overstep your boss' authority is to figure out who is over him. Remember, even though he is your direct superior, that doesn't mean that he is God. Often bosses are difficult because somebody is breathing down their necks to ensure that they provide consistent performance. Take these pressures into account when you are deciding what to do.
When you figure out who is your boss' boss, appeal to him directly. Make sure that you keep proper records of your communication with this higher authority, getting things in writing if necessary. This is especially important if your boss is trying to get you to do something which is immoral, or against company policy.
If your boss is asking you to do something which you believe to be illegal, check the corresponding laws. If it is illegal, go straight to the police. It's of the absolute utmost importance that you do not do what he tells you, as you will become responsible for any crime committed.
In the meantime, you must create delays with your boss. If he approaches you regarding the assignment given, it's best to give vague answers which don't really communicate much real information. Coming up with something Dilbert-like is probably your best bet. Explain that something else came up, that it's "in the works," or that there's another project which you must complete first. Create smoke screens and diversions until you get an answer from the real authority.
If you're going over your boss' head, you are taking your life into your own hands. So proceed with caution. Remember, this is your career. Manage it wisely.
