Although it is understandable why so many gays and lesbians choose to live in the closet, the action does damage all. For centuries the gay and lesbian society has been on the margins of society. So much so, that gays and lesbians have to look into history to find positive role models. People like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson just to name a few. There are no present day role models. Gay youth have nobody to claim as their own who lives a full vibrant life. Gay and lesbian equal rights are diminished by the number of them living in the closet. It gives the wrong meaning to society, the message that homosexuality is sick and deviant, therefore should be kept secretive.
Gays and Lesbians will only get full and equal rights when more of them come out of the closet. When society finds out just how many there are. At a very conservative estimate of one percent of the population, that is still some three million gays and lesbians. This would show society the buying power of gays and lesbians. This would show the voting power, three million is a lot of votes, and the number is more than likely higher. When gays and lesbians feel safe enough to come out of the closet they, and society will be surprised at how much of society they make up. There might come a day when a sports hero, actor or singing star who comes out and be a positive role model for gay youth, maybe then, gay youth will not choose drugs, or booze or even suicide to deal with themselves.
