It was just a newspaper advertisement that caught my eye, and after seeing it, it made perfect sense. I'd been going to this place since I was a small child, and have never had a bad time while being there.
Yup, seeing that article made up my mind - I was going to apply to Canobie Lake Park.
If you are from the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts or from Southern New Hampshire, you knew all about Canobie Lake Park growing up. For those readers who don't know, Canobie Lake Park, also known simply as Canobie, is an amusement park in Salem, NH that has been running for over 100 years.
We'd go there multiple times per summer and even go there on school trips every year. With a lifetime of memories cycling in my mind, I knew that a place this fun to visit must be almost as fun to work for!
After filling out an application and having a short interview, I was offered a position in the gaming department. Basically, this meant I didn't have to worry about running a ride - all I had to do was get people to play my game.
I worked a variety of games, and met a variety of people, both park visitors and coworkers.
About 90% of the park employees were fellow teenagers, so I knew a few kids from school and met a few friends along the way. The employees, or "Cast" as we were referred to, would get together some nights after the park was closed and have parties. It helped with employee moral and comradery.
A few other nice things about working at Canobie - you get to be outdoors most of the day AND you never had to worry about lack of hours. Canobie always allowed me to work as many hours as I requested and that of course meant more money in my pocket.
Which of course meant for a better school year ahead!
When you realize how much fun an amusement park brings to families or people in general, and get to be a part of that as well as meet all kinds of people, you look back on it and realize just how great a summer job it really was.
