Okay, I can see from what has been written so far that the main reason you feel that Geeks, intellectuals, free thinking people, you pick your title, are Atheists, is because your minds are more open than religious people, and you need hard facts to prove what you believe. I can understand such a perspective, but the problem is, it does not line up with reality.
Take a survey of history if you will. who are those who have made some of the greatest scientific advances in the history of the world? Einstein (Christian), Newton (Christian), Locke (Christian), Pascal (Christian), Pasture (Christian), grosseteste (Christian) In case you don't know who he is, he is the guy who invented the scientific method, Peckham (Christian) again in case you don't know, he wrote one of the first elementary scientific textbooks later to be read by one Leonardo Da Vinci,.... HMMMMM, I don't know about you but I am beginning to see a trend.
Lets take a look at great thinkers of an un-scientific nature, i.e. philosophers. Kierkegaard(Christian), Lock (Christian), Nietzsche (decidedly un-Christian), Marx (decidedly un-Christian) and he was more of a sociologist than a philosopher anyway, Decarts (un-Christian), Plantinga (Christian), Aquinas (Christian), Hume (debated Christian), and the list goes on. I'll grant that there have certainly been non-Christian thinkers through history that have contributed significantly to science, philosophy, and other areas of intellectual development. However, the percentages speak far more in favor of Christians, and even other religions than they do for atheists. Pick any field be it Architecture, to Zoology, the people who are always on the cutting edge of development are people of religious backgrounds.
So, now we come back to the original question. Why are most Geeks Atheists? When there is such a tradition of great thinkers on the side of Religion, Why do most Geeks now think the answers lie elsewhere? Have things changed that much? I think the answer is no they have not. Rather, the reason so many "geeks" are atheists is because they have failed to examine their own world views. They claim to be open thinkers yet so few have truly explored the tenets of the system they hold to. I have written another article regarding the existence of God, and weather or not He can be disproved. To keep things clear, no you cannot prove God exists, neither can you disprove Him. Please read that article to explore the problem of eternity.
