Poetry: Looking in the mirror

Stare at a blank page before you
And see what you're really made of.
Dare to write your every thought
And see what you've been afraid of.

What you see won't be love,
And it won't spark a smile.
You'll see a hundred tiny monsters
And they've been there quite a while.

For when you are not looking,
And things, unnoticed, get by,
They'll enter your mind as harmless thoughts
And remain but a gleam in your eye.

These things show you a spectrum
In a thousand unleashed horrors.
A dementia only you can find
By searching through the mirrors.

The edge of dementia is but a cliff;
You can be pushed, or jump on your own.
You always go there with purpose,
But you can never leave alone.

You see, these things go there with you,
Though they only go in as thoughts.
When you return, they remain,
But you release the fools who jumped.
