Causes of stomach ulcers
Article ToolsIt is now widely recognized by physicians that stomach ulcers are caused by a bacterium known as Helicobacter Pylorus. The standard treatment for these ulcers is now a combination of a proton pump inhibitor to greatly reduce stomach acid given in conjunction with an antibiotic to eliminate the infection. The antibiotic of choice is usually Biaxin (generically known as Clarithromycin) and the treatment protocol is about two weeks in duration with the antibiotic taken orally 2x a day and the proton pump inhibitor once each day.
The cure rate approaches 100%, but must be monitored by a physician, preferably a gastroenterologist. DON'T self-medicate or try to use home remedies like milk. They do nothing to eliminate the problem. Untreated stomach ulcers can cause anemia, perforate and become a life-threatening surgical emergency, or lead to stomach cancer.
