I have been out of work a couple times, and each time is a good opportunity and learning experience. Looking for a job is the perfect time to recreate yourself, realign your goals, and make a positive change.
When looking for a job, preparation is most important. Preparing an awesome resume, cover letter, and for interview scenarios are extremely helpful in acquiring a job and alleviates a lot of the stress find a job. Here are my steps I take to acquiring a job/career:
1. Update your resume. I update my resume and change the letterhead and formatting so it is current and relevant. Then I create both a PDF resume and a plain text resume in Microsoft Word or other text editor. If you don't have a resume, and don't know how to create one, visit this web site: www.rockportinstitute.com/resu mes.html
2. Create a digital portfolio (if applicable). I am a graphic/web designer, so having a digital portfolio is a must. Make sure that you have your portfolio online (preferably on your personal web site), and a copy on disc or DVD that you can directly give to an employer.
3. Online Job Searches. Go to web sites like Craigslist.com, Monster.com, Indeed.com, Careerbuilder.com, etc. Search for jobs in your field daily and send out your resume and cover letter via email to each potential employer. I have had a 20% response rate on average by doing this and sending out a quality resume. Also, create a services ad on Craigslist of what you can offer. I have received web design jobs this way.
4. Scout out potential employers. Check your local phone book and create a list of businesses in your field that you can submit a resume too. Purchase a map and chart where all the businesses are, and then spend a couple days submitting resumes directly to these companies. It doesn't matter if they are hiring or not, often I have noticed that many employers who may be looking for a new employee don't advertise, so it is beneficial to submit your resume to every potential employer. Also, submit a personalized cover letter to each company along with the resume, this shows that you are really interested in that particular company and improves chances of getting hired.
5. Call backs. You should call back every employer you submitted a resume to that you know was hiring at the time. Politely inquire as to the status of the job opening. Call back between 3-7 days after you submit your resume. If you don't have the employers phone number, send a follow-up email
6. Interview. If you get an interview, prepare, prepare, prepare! This is very important. Ask yourself a list of interview questions, and make sure you have direct and positive answers. Never say anything negative about yourself, and emphasize your good qualities. Dress decently and present good hygiene, and make sure you are early! Getting their 5-10 minutes early reflects good upon you.
With these tips, you should be on your way to achieving a great job!
