The search for work can often become a daunting task, but with preparation, one can succeed at finding a job in their area of expertise.
I've been out of a work a couple times, and here is what I did in order to get a new job:
1. Updated my resume. I updated my resume and changed the letterhead and formatting so it was current and relevant. Then I created both a PDF resume and a plain text resume in Microsoft Word or other text editor. If you don't have a resume, and don't know how to create one, visit this web site: www.rockportinstitute.com/resu mes.html
2. Create a digital portfolio (if applicable). I am a graphic/web designer, so having a digital portfolio is a must. Make sure that you have your portfolio online (preferably on your personal web site), and a copy on disc or DVD that you can directly give to an employer.
3. Online Job Searches. Go to web sites like Craigslist.com, Monster.com, Indeed.com, Careerbuilder.com, etc. Search for jobs in your field daily and send out your resume and coverletter via email to each potential employer. I have had a 20% response rate on average by doing this and sending out a quality resume. Also, create a services ad on Craigslist of what you can offer. I have received web design jobs this way.
4. Scout out potential employers. Check your local phone book and create a list of businesses in your field that you can submit a resume too. Purchase a map and log where all the businesses are, and then spend a couple days submitting resumes directly to these companies. It doesn't matter if they are hiring or not, often I have noticed that many employers who may be looking for a new employee don't advertise, so it is beneficial to submit your resume to every potential employer. Also, submit a personalized cover letter to each company along with the resume, this shows that you are really interested in that particular company and improves chances of getting hired.
5. Call backs. You should call back every employer you submitted a resume to that you know was hiring at the time. Call back between 3-7 days after you submit your resume.
6. Interview. If you get an interview, prepare, prepare, prepare! This is very important. Ask yourself a list of interview questions, and make sure you have direct and positive answers. Never say anything negative about yourself, and emphasize your good qualities. Dress decently and present good hygiene, and make sure you are early! Getting their 5-10 minutes early reflects good upon you.
I hope this helps in finding a great job!
