Once hours have been established that suit both the carer and the patient, family should bear in mind that with deteriorating health, these needs do need assessing at three month intervals, or in the case of change in health.
It is important to ensure that all the daily needs of the patient are catered for, and that things like shopping are performed during those hours when the patient doesn't need the carer to be in the home. Giving an allowance for food each week, it would be wise for family to ask the patient if they would prefer a member of the family to look after the finances of the home, rather than handing the responsibility over to carers.
With proper research and attention to all the details that transition to having in home care can be a smooth one. Agencies provide respite care, and this means that the carer gets a break from caring and that the patient also gets a holiday away from home in a safe environment.
Caring for loved ones is our moral obligation and by following these guidelines, a family can explore all the possibilities available to them.
