Famous mothers throughout history

by Bridget Webber

There have been many famous mothers throughout history. Some are famous for their courage and loving nature, others for being a celebrity, or for being controversial.

One of the worlds most famous mothers in my life time so far has been Princess Diana, mother of the British princes William and Harry. She was particularly famous for her warmth and kindness and connection with everyday people.

Princess Diana also campaigned to get rid of land mines and took it upon herself to do as much good as she could in her short lifetime, once she had the power of the press and the support of the nation behind her.

She was also famous for her style and playful nature, as well as her shyness and vulnerability. People felt that she was special, but was also like themselves in many ways, as she wasn't afraid to be real, rather than cold and distant.

Probably the most famous mother of all time is the virgin Mary. Portrayed beautifully in the well known painting 'The Madonna and Child'.

Another famous mother, also called Madonna who once sang 'Like a Virgin', but who is not exactly like the virgin Mary, is the pop star.

Madonna is famous for her unique musical style and also, more recently, for adopting a black child from a different culture. She serves as a role model for older women, proving that you can still be sexy and vibrant as you become more mature.

Like-wise Angelina Jolie has gone down the adoption route to become a mother but hasn't been so loud about doing so. She is famous for stealing Brad Pitt away from his former love, and for her beauty and acting skills.

My favorite mother, apart from my own of course, has to be Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa won the Nobel peace prize for her tireless work caring for poor people in Calcutta and although she is no longer with us remains an inspiration to us all.

Perhaps the very best known mother in the world is mother nature herself. We refer to what some may also call Gods creation, as being the work of this well known mother.

The words, 'Mother Earth', may have several meanings. The first being the earth itself which, in this instance, is being considered in the feminine perspective due to the ability to create life. The other type of mother relating to a similar title is a woman who is very down to earth and practical. She may be thought of as an earth mother.

Many other well known mothers are actually fictitious characters. Mother Goose and Mother Hubbard are just two who spring to mind. Although these characters are not real they have become ingrained into the realms of history due to their popularity.

Some fictional mothers are almost famous due to their absence. Have you ever wondered where the mother was who left all of those children living in a shoe with an old lady in the rhyme had gone? Apparently the old woman had so many children to look after that she 'didn't know what to do'.

Like-wise the mother who gave birth to the captains seven children in the film, 'The Sound of Music', may not be thought about much, but without her there couldn't have been a storyline that has captured audiences hearts for generations.
