Mental coping mechanisms for obsessive thoughts

Handy tips for coping with mental obsessing can be useful if you find yourself unable to stop thinking about a problem or issue that worries you.

Firstly,to start with an quote:

"...For example, anger or resentment strengthen the ego enormously by increasing the sense of separateness, emphasizing the otherness of others and creating a seemingly unassailable fortresslike mental position of "rightness." " Page 111. "A New Earth"

Tolle goes on to say that once you become aware that a part of you is aware that you take some form of (perverse) pleasure out of these negative states of mind, (obsessing, feeling self-righteous or defensive or angry, eg) - in that moment - you shift from ego to self-awareness, or that part of you that is God.

Fome my understanding, in the current situation, it is having faith that by handing my problems over to God (greater power), He will sort them out. I don't have to do anything except if I really must, then I could try viewing the situation from a different perspective, which is one of the bigger picture. Just for a moment, pretend I am looking at the world from (say) outer space - just as a being or point of awareness - are the dynamics of (my) human (ego) 'suffering' still as significant? Can I let go and let God? How do I do that, in practical terms?

It's a challenge but I am up for it- it really isn't all that fun obsessing, after a while! I am going to put this to the test and try the approach of "leave things be." If I find myself obsessing or mulling things over, I will become aware of it as soon as possible, acknowledge that is what I am doing, then turn my attention to something a bit more constructive for my mind - like the attitude of gratitude, or play my flute, or pat a cat!

If I really wanted to get confrontational, I could send some thoughts thinking ONLY of the positive qualities of the person/situation that has been concerning me. !

The point of this short article is to encourage one to be proactive and not play victim to repetitious thought patterns!
