What makes a mother a mother? Is it the fact that you gave birth to a child, or is the endless nights that you lie awake with them because their tummy hurts, or the thunder scared them? The fact that you were in labor for 9 hours, or that you read their favorite bedtime story JUST ONE MORE TIME night after night so they fall asleep with a smile on their faces? The answer lies within the heart of a child.
I myself at the age of 9 months was given to my "step mom". Through her struggle and fight, I became the woman who writes before you today. Never until i became a mother myself could I have ever appreciated all the she gave up for me, and all the sacrifices she made for my happiness.
At the age of 35 I now have three wonderful children and two beautiful step sons who are my heart and my soul. My husband and I married almost two years ago, and never in a million years did i see the battle I was fixing to come up against.
The old saying goes "There is no fury like a woman scorned". I can tell you now from experience that saying couldn't be any closer to the truth. From the day my husband and I got married, the boys were INSTANTLY put into the middle of what would be an ugly war. Used as if pawns in a game, their little hearts and lives were torn apart day by day. Without hesitation my mother instinct kicked in, and my only goal for these two children were to love and protect them at all costs. They had already seen so many upsets and disappointments in their lives, I had to figure a way to make it somehow better for them, before they were scarred permanently for life.
I gave all I had for them (as much as I could when they were with us) just as much as I gave my own children. I changed the diapers, dried the tears, calmed the fears, read bedtime story after bedtime story, and gave them the gift of laughter. I saw after awhile how precious their laughter was. As time went on, their little eyes would sparkle with a hug, and "I love you mommy" quickly emerged.
My mother in law always told me a child will tell you how they feel from within their hearts. It has been two years now since they came into my life, and I have now been "Instructed" by their mom that I am not to allow them to call me "Mommy".
