Caffeine has been found to guard against skin cancer in laboratory mice in the UC, by helping to kill off pre-cancerous cells. However, this was by the direct application of the caffeine to the skin, so drinking it in coffee doesn't necessarily help - although it was found to protect the mice from skin cancer, they had to drink it in relative amounts that are far greater than we would be able to tolerate.
It does, though, mean that within the next few years, we may start to see caffeine used in skin lotions or creams, in which the caffeine may even be able to help kill off tumours in skin cells while they are still microscopic.
This research has only been done on squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer - the researchers do not know the effects of caffeine on melanoma, a rarer and deadlier form of skin cancer.
