Liberal feminism, as opposed to radical feminism, argues that women can achieve equality through social reform: in the workplace, in the law, and in the wider culture. They therefore believe that men need not be challenged about their place in society - their aim is not to overthrow a patriarchy, but simply to bring everyone up to the point at which we are all equal.
Liberal feminists would support the equalisation of culture by moves to prevent sexims in society. Such moves would include:
- Outlawing prejudice of all forms in the workplace and outside it.
- Getting equal pay and equal opportunities for all people in all jobs (usually this would involved increasing women's pay to match men's).
- Getting affordable child support for women in work.
- Getting equitable maternity and paternity care so that the family unit can be supported equally by men and women.
- Getting women the right to choice with regards to abortion.
- Supporting women to reach the top of their profession, or supporting women with their own businesses.
- Offering support to women who stay at home, particularly in trying to equalise the gender roles within the home.
- Breaking down social stereotypes of women so that gender stereotyping and prejudice no longer stand in the way of women in society.
This type of feminism would be analagous to the success of the Civil Rights Act at allowing black people to enter any type of employment, and so mainstreaming them into society.
