On-line classes require excellent textual learning skills. Most, if not all, instructions, syllabi, chat room dialogues, and assignments require the ability to read and write. If you have strong reading and writing skills, the on-line alternative may be a good choice. If you learn better through other modalities (e.g. hearing, watching, or doing), the on-line route may prove very frustrating.
Knowing how you learn will allow you to increase your probability for success in any educational setting. On-line classes demand similar time and effort as a traditional class for a meaningful return on your investment. Lurking in an on-line class chat is not much different from sitting passively at the back of the room. Failing to complete assignments or not being a productive member of a team have the same negative effect on either classroom setting.
The creators of on-line offerings are just beginning to tap the potential for integrating non-textual tools into their courses. The exciting world of blogs, tunes, vids, and web-cams may enhance and improve your on-line experience. Just be sure you know how to use the hardware and software before you tackle the class in an on-line environment.
