What is equalism?

Equalismn is the promotion of an egalitarian philosophy of life, whereby we are not just "colour-blind" but "gender-blind". Although the term has mostly concentrated on promoting the equality of race and gender, the fundamental belief is that all people are born equal, and therefore have equal rights in life.

The term is often used by people who want to distinguish themselves from feminists, out of a belief that feminism promotes only women's rights, and may therefore promote the exclusion of the rights of men.

Equalists often belief that feminism focuses too much on the gendered experience of women, and therefore does not promote equality, because the inequality of women necessarily implies their subjugation by men. Therefore, equalists, or eqalitarians, seek to promote equality without focusing on specific phenomena such as female oppression.

Equalism can be distinguished from egalitarianism, because equalism implies only equal social rights within our current social framework, whereas some forms of egalitarianism promote a change in social ideology. Communism is an egalitarian doctrine that says everyone must have material equality: in order to achieve this, material inequality must be redressed by taking material possessions away from some people within society.

For the above reasons, equalists often condemn affirmative action, a tool of mainstream liberals, because they see this as concentrating too much on one particular group's subjective experiences. Instead, equalists reject all forms of gender and racial oppression and stereotypes in the belief that everyone should be treated equally.
