Being late for work does not really bother me. By late I am talking about a minute or two after nine, not strolling in 45 minutes to an hour late for no reason. I know some co-workers who take it as a personal affront to their very selves that one co-worker is constantly late for work. I do not, for several reasons. First, I do not base myself on what others do. Unless that person being three minutes late has a direct effect on me and my ability to perform my job, then it just does not matter. Also, it kills me when employers expect you to ignore the clock at the end of the day, yet, you must always be a slave to it in the morning.
When I am late, I will make up the time by cutting my lunch short or by staying a little late. I have enough honesty in myself and respect for my employers not to short-change them. Again, if some one I work with takes advantage then it is up to the employer to do something.
This issue, it seems to me, is a good way to weed out those workers with character from those without it.
Finally, life is complicated enough without worrying about a minute or two here or there. Your co-workers might be going through things in their lies that you are unaware of which can contribute to this problem. I know when I had to deal with daycare issues, I was late more than a few times. However, now that daycare is done for me, I do not have that problem.
Bottom line is there are always going to be people who take advantage of their employers; don't be one of them. Mind your own business and do what is right for you and don't worry what the person in the next cubicle is or isn't doing.
