Understanding genetic modification

Every Living organism such as plants and animals consist of cells. Cells contain genes encoded on strands of DNA. Genetic modification involves transfer of Genetic material which results in the production of improved genetic combinations. The most beneficial property of this technique is that it allows selction, transfer and manipulation of a single gene. A genetically modified organism is a virus, bacterium, plants or animals in which the genetic material has been changed to attain certain needs of humans.

GOOD ASPECTS OF GMOs.
Correcting genetic defects, production of animal proteins, making improvements in organisms, production of medicines like antibiotics, painkillers, vaccines; manufacturing of growth hormones and insulin, and protection of organisms from attack of pests and diseases.

CONCERNS ABOUT GMOs.
What happens if the gene escapes from the GMO to environment? This question raises the eyebrow of many people. Thus there is srtict regulations to allow GM food stuffs. Resistance of GMOs to antibiotics, Herbicides and other chemicals are major concerns. GMOs are a great risk to environment and wild life diversity.
