How to start a bakery or a cookie business

A friend has recently, and without any real intention started a gluten free breadmaking business. It was easy and all started when she acquired a breadmaker. These machines are available fairly cheaply and are extremely easy to use. Because of the popularity of bread making, caused by bread machine availability, the flours are also available and some unusual flours are coming onto the market.

Wheat free speciality flours, that are made from unusual grains, are easily available now and this has meant that people who's bodies are intolerant to wheat are able to enjoy bread again. My friend started experimenting with these flours to get some acceptable gluten free bread for herself and friends and what started off as a fun project has turned into a business.

She makes Gluten free bread and people with wheat intolerance are very keen to buy it from her. She has even expanded her output by acquiring another bread machine! Her initial outlay on the bread machines has been 1. The first she brought at a boot sale for a 1 and the second was given to her by someone who couldn't be bothered to use it!

The variety of breads and cakes that can be made in these machines is plentiful and recipes are easy to adapt. Bread machine cookbooks are available at very small cost through sites such as Ebay, both my breadmaker and the two cookbooks I've recently acquired have come from a local charity shop, my total outlay has been 6.

Other equipment needed consists of nothing more than some measuring cups or scales and spoons. The breadmaker and other equipment is easy to clean, so hygiene levels are easy to maintain. Foodstuffs can be stored carefully in clean containers and that is all that's needed to meet hygiene standards. For a more full on speciality bread and cake enterprise, it may be necessary to attend local education classes on basic food hygiene.

In summary then, a cottage industry, making bread and speciality cakes, for people in the local community, is an easy and very cheap business to start. Equipment is easy and cheap to acquire, easy to use and easy to keep clean. There is a market for speciality bread and producing such bread will generate a custom and profit. Contacting local Coeliacs societies and letting them know of the availability of wheat free bread and cakes would help to expand the business.
