Distance learning: What you need to know

Distance learning is an excellent option for many adults, especially those who want to further their careers by gaining additional qualifications, whilst still being able to work. However, distance learning will not suit everyone. Whether or not distance learning is for you will depend upon a number of points which I will address in this article.

*What you want to study*

Distance learning is more appropriate for some subjects. Subjects, which are academically based, are far more suited to distance learning than those which are skills-based. This is common sense really, but you're not likely to get far in a teacher training degree if you have no contact with children in schools!

*What previous knowledge you have of the subject *
Distance learning would be extremely difficult in a subject that you have no previous knowledge of, particularly a technical subject, unless of course you are extremely good at picking things up from independent study. For instance, I would not recommend that someone even considers a qualification in maths by distance learning if they have no understanding of maths.

Before I got my present job I did an ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) qualification by distance learning. I discussed with the tutors running the course, and we agreed that my computer skills were already sufficient enough for me to be able to do it at home. If I had been a beginner though, taught study would have been essential.

*What previous experience you have of independent study*
At the moment I am doing an A level in Psychology (for those outside the UK, this is an advanced qualification which people do after general qualifications, but before University). However, I have spent four years at university and completed a Bachelors and a Masters degree. Therefore I have a great deal of experience in working independently, and working to a higher level than what I'm now studying, albeit in a different subject.

I have very little input from my Psychology tutor, and we meet very infrequently. However, if I did need more help he would be able to offer that. Before starting a course you will need to discuss your individual needs.

*Why you are doing it*
Are you doing the learning for fun, or to gain a qualification? If you are wanting a qualification it is especially important that you discuss your options before opting for distance learning, especially if you don't have much experience of doing exams.
