Beach volleyball basics

by Lupine

Beach volleyball is just volleyball played in the sand. While the term implies it is only played at the beach this is not true. Anywhere sand exists, and often it is imported just for beach volleyball, you can play this game. I attended a women's Pro Volleyball Tournament in Phoenix, where there is plenty of sand but no beaches.

Beach Volleyball Tournaments are a lot of fun and and usually played by and attended by people with skimpy attire on. Lots of bikinis.

There are some major differences between indoor volleyball and beach volleyball, other than the surface. The size of the court is a little smaller in beach volleyball and the matches are usually contested by just two or sometimes four players. The block counts as the first contact in beach volleyball and you are also allowed to go onto the other side of the net as long as you do not interfere with your opponents.

Players also do not have to rotate. And players play on the sand barefoot or with socks if the sand is too hot. The ball is also softer and slightly larger.

Beach volleyball players use hand signals behind their backs as they face their opponents to let their teammate know which direction they are going to go during the play. Important to try and keep your opponents from knowing which direction you will defend and attack.

The greatest beach volleyball player of all time is Karch Kiraly. He was famous for not leaving the court during breaks. He would just stand at the net waiting for play to resume.

Beach Volleyball is popular all over the world, especially in countries with lots of beaches like Australia, the United States and Brazil.
