Distance learning: What you need to know

When deciding between distance learning and more traditional classroom based courses and degree programs, it is important that you understand both the benefits distance learning can provide, and the limitations it has. Distance learning is not for everyone, nor is every degree program suited to the distance learning format. Once you decide to pursue a degree through distance learning, it is very important to thoroughly research the schools that offer your desired degree program before signing up for any course.

The main reason that it is wise, and even necessary, to research the schools is because you, as a student, need to know that the school is accredited. That means that the credits you earn by taking their classes can be used toward other degrees from other schools and universities. A school that is not accredited is often-times considered a diploma mill. They charge students thousands of dollars for what turns out to be a useless degree. Degrees from this type of school will be of no use to the student when it comes time to get a job in their chosen profession.

It is also wise to thoroughly check out what programs they offer, and what sort of curriculum they have. It is important that the skills they teach are still current and in demand in the workplace. If they teach outdated skills, the degree will do the student no good after graduation. They will have a degree in their chosen field, but will not have the skills needed to perform jobs in that field.

It is also important to remember that distance learning programs are self-study programs. You will be accessing your course work via the internet or mail, and will be turning in your assignments the same way. If you do not work well at self-paced projects then distance learning may not be for you. You also do not have access to your instructor and other classmates on a daily basis. This can make learning harder. Where in a traditional classroom there are usually numerous lectures on any given subject, but in a distance learning program you must gain your knowledge of a subject by reading and researching. If you have trouble learning things in this manner, you would probably be better off in a traditional classroom environment.

It is also important to consider details like your internet connection speed and dependability. This is very important because the slower your internet connection, the longer it will take you to accomplish your research and assignments. You also need to be able to depend on your internet connection; without being able to do so, you cannot be certain that you will always be able to access your classroom and materials.

Once you have carefully evaluated your options, and decide to pursue a distance learning degree program, you must remember not to procrastinate and put off doing your assignments. A power outage or your internet service going out could make the difference in you getting your work turned in or not. You will have to work a little harder, and be much more determined to succeed in a distance learning program, but if you follow this advice you should be able to complete your program and do well in class.
