Unwanted advertising, also known as "spam" can become extremely overwhelming and annoying, as a result. Why? Because a lot of spam you receive is useless or completely unimportant and irrelevant to what interests you. You don't want to open your email or read a website that is filled with the same, insignificant thing, day after day. However; there are instances where spam is highly inappropriate. Everything from it's nature to it's content.
As someone who owns a website and blog, I think the best way to prevent and fight guestbook spam on your website or blog is simply "moderation". Moderating the comments is the best decision you will make. When comments are moderated, they are temporary disabled (or simply not shown) until you, the owner of your website or blog, approves them. When they are approved, they can be shown. It is the best decision I have made. In fact, it was so good, I have not had any "spammers" attack my blog in spam mode since.
Moderation not only prevents guestbook spam, but also prevents individuals from comment abuse or abusing the guestbook system at all.
