Why bees are useful in the garden

If we are not beekeepers, we won't immediately see the benefit of having bees in our gardens. We won't be able to open the hives and see the sweet honey dripping from the combs.

But five months from now, we won't have any apple pies either. Ten months from now, we won't have any flower seeds to spread into new parts of the garden.

Bees are the major pollinators of the best-known parts of our world. They go from flower to flower, seeking out nectar to make into honey, and pollen to make into bee-bread. In the process, they take a little of the pollen from flower to flower as well. This transferred pollen is what allows the flower to create a seed, and sometimes a fruit to protect that seed. So much do the flowers rely on this, that they have evolved special markings on their blossoms visible only in a bee's ultraviolet vision range, a floral equivalent of Sweet Nectar Here!

The flowers know. We should trust their wisdom.
