Layoffs: How to file for unemployment insurance in the US

Unemployment insurance in the United States is something that any worker who was fired through none of their own fault can qualify for. This is in fact one of the great things about our country-the fact that if you get fired there is a safety net in place to keep you form falling into the abyss.

Being fired is a terrible ordeal not only because of the potential loss of confidence but most importantly because of the loss of security. This is most painful of all when you were a good worker and got fired through no fault of your own. Luckily, however, there are insurance options built into our government system designed to soften the blow for people exactly like you.

Filing for unemployment insurance in the US is a relatively simple process. You need to look up your state's Department of Labor and Workforce Development Agency. They will be able to route you to the nearest Unemployment Insurer's office. Many states even let you file online. A great directory of all the State Unemployment Offices is www.jobsearch.about.com/od/une mployment/a/unemployme ntoff.htm. This should be your first stop.

Once you have the location things get really easy. Make sure to bring your paperwork confirming the firing. This is just as vital as bringing your identification so make sure to obtain a copy if you do not already have one. Employers are legally required to keep them so this should pose no problem for you.

Make sure you are eligible. You need to have been working for this company for at least a year and have been fired through no fault of your own to qualify. If you were fired for misconduct of some sort you will be disqualified.

In the end, unemployment insurance is something that keeps the American economy alive and kicking. We need our citizens to be above the fluctuations of the market and not enslaved to them. Following the above tips will allow you to collect a maximum of twenty six paychecks and give you a chance to get back on your feet in a stress free environment.
