Getting older is bad enough but when it starts to affect the areas of your life that should be most secure it can be downright terrifying. If you have been working at one place for years and doing a good job only to get fired once you get past a certain age there is a good chance you were discriminated against.
If you were let go because of your age this is a form of discrimination like any other. The first thing you need to do is make your case. You are going to have to find witnesses, documents and other evidence to support your assertion.
Once you have these in hand there are some organizations that will investigate the matter for you with no cost to you either way. There are two that stand out as the most helpful for cases of discrimination against the elderly.
The first is the Equal Opportunity Center. You can call them at 1-800-669-4000, or 1800-669-6820 if you are suffering from some sort of hearing problem. You can also find them online at their website www.eeoc.gov/.
Another great resource for elderly who have been discriminated against is the Human Rights Commission. You can call them by phone at 1-800-233-3247. You can also access them through their website at www.hum.wa.gov/.
These are two great resources and will be enough to meet your needs. On the off chance they are unable to help you ask for a "right to sue" form and use that to solicit help from local lawyers. If you think you have been discriminated against because of age it is important that you take action for others in your situation as well as your own peace of mind. Good luck.
