But they didn't consider the fact that the government was doing a very poor job in responding to this natural disaster. There were people that desperately needed help. Even when foreign countries offered to help, the United States government had turned them away.
What else were they going to do? They need food, water, and clothing to survive. You need money to buy that food, water, and clothing if that's the case. Only thing you can resort to is stealing because the Hurricane Katrina fiasco was a very desperate call. The civilians had to take matters into their own hands.
That's one reason people steal because there are no other alternatives. Hurricane Katrina was more than enough proof.
There are cases where people steal because it gives them a rush whether its a small item or a very big item such as an automobile. They don't care about the consequences, they just want that andrenaline rush when they steal something and run from the cops. To them, it's the only way they feel "alive."
There are people that steal to make a quick buck. Recently, I saw an episode of Dateline NBC where they went into Houston, Texas where a car theft is running rampant. Car jackers take stolen cars to chop shops for quick money. They tend to use the stolen money for numerous reasons. Mainly reason is to buy drugs like weed and heroin.
Which brings to light a major reason in the United States on why people steal. There are plenty of people that have developed serious drug habits. And drugs are pretty expensive. So they resort to mugging people and stealing the contents of their wallets such as money and credit cards. Money can be used outright while they can buy stuff with credit cards and sell them on the black market for instant cash in which the cash is used to further supply their drug habits.
Meaning one can buy stolen merchandise for cheap off of a druggie because they need that money to spend on whatever drugs they can get their hands on. Basically, illegal drugs are a contributing factor on the reasons people tend to steal.
They got people robbing banks and stealing huge sums of cash. But they don't use the cash outright, instead they hide the cash somewhere and lay low until the statute of limitations pass. That's too a reason to steal. Because people want money in the shortest amount of time.
There is white-collar theft as well with the higher-ups stealing from their employees and what not because of their greed. The more money they make, the greedier they get. The Enron
