Syphilis is a well known sexually transmitted disease that has been around since before medieval times. Although in the past, historical records have shown that syphilis was rarely treated and often resulted in death; advancements in medical technologies have allowed doctors to more accurately diagnose and treat this infectious disease.
Some common cases of syphilis often go undetected for lengthy periods of time before mild symptoms begin to arise and develop as the disease progresses. Usually individuals who have contracted syphilis will complain of abnormal growths on their genitals or the surrounding areas. While these ulcers generally clear away on their own as the life cycle of the bacteria runs its course, patients will often experience high fevers and headaches as a result of the infection. Aching pain in the joints or rashes on all areas of the body are also common symptoms that may indicate a Syphilis infection.
Fortunately, Syphilis is treatable with prescription antibiotics; therefore, if you think you may have contracted syphilis, contact your physician immediately so that he or she can administer the necessary tests and any subsequent treatments.
Overall, it is important for sexually active individuals to keep in mind that if left untreated, sexually transmitted diseases can evolve and grow increasingly complicated, often resulting in more serious medical conditions. Stick to the treatment plan that you and your doctor have agreed upon, and abstain from any sexual activity until you've received your doctor's approval.
