Cruising with children

Lucky for us there are numerous ways to handle the potentially problematic situation of cruising with children. Whether single or married you will inevitably want to explore some more adult things and your children probably feel the same. The cruise experience is perfectly calibrated to respond to this need.

The first question is how old the children are. If you have really young children then you need to get them a sitter when you go out and many cruise ships have this service built in. You are going to have to check with your cruise service and make sure they put you on a line that has this capability.

For preteens there are other options. There will be children's activity centers throughout the ship. These are supervised so that you can leave your children there in confidence.

As far as teens are concerned the situation almost takes care of itself. They are definitely going to want to have some time on their own and most cruise ships provide excellent outlets. Most have a special place for teens to hang out at any time, as well as teen only parties and events during the day and night.

I think the key to having a good time on a cruise with children is having family events and then events that each group goes to on their own, if at all possible. This way your children get the thrill of playing with their peers while you get the more subtle pleasures of adult interaction. Cruise ships may not be perfect but on this count, they're dead on.
