The gay and lesbian population in different areas

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered peoples can be found in most places where you look. They are not concentrated in any one place, even though anecdotal evidence may suggest otherwise. Certain cities and other locations have larger populations of GLBT individuals because they have actively advertised themselves as friendly to that community in a society that is still very much hesitant about the idea of alternative sexualities.

In general, places that have an outward and overbearing discrimination against GLBT individuals have fewer "out" people, either because they have moved to a place that is more tolerant, or because they fear the repercussions if they did come out. But that is the way it is with most things: if you like French restaurants, you might be likely to move to France, or at least to someplace that has good French restaurants. Larger cities tend to offer a more cohesive community, and many GLBT individuals are drawn there - permanently or temporarily - because they are more likely to meet other GLBT people.
