The history of the spice trade

by Lupine

The history of the spice trade is the history of humankind. Archaeologists have found traces of spices at nearly all major historical digs. Meaning that humans have been trading spices forever.

Historians believe that the spice trade helped to spur the age of exploration. The demand for spices and spice like commodities caused humans to explore for new sources and routes to bring those newfound spices back.

The fact that the wealthy were the ones who wanted the spices to make their food taste good was a key factor. The wealthy had the money to demand what they wanted. And they could manipulate government leaders to finance the explorers to look for new trade routes and new spices.

Many explorers were financed to find new trade routes for bringing spices home. And to find new spices for use at home.

Marco Polo went off to China along a well known spice trade route. So one can say that the spice trade opened up the world to all.
