SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND (2006) Starring Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, Anna Faris, Eddie Izzard.

Matt (Wilson) dumps clingy, controlling girlfriend Jenny (Thurman) only to find himself at the mercy of her superpowers finding out that hell hath no fury like a superwoman scorned. Jenny is really formidable superheroine G-Girl.

Getting dumped by Matt merely irritates her but when he moves on and begins to date co-worker Hannah (Anna Faris) she really loses it.

Ummm...okay...this is obviously more a woman's fantasy I think than a guy's fantasy but I still think it is a terrific idea to explore. The idea of a superhero's lovelife being a disaster was always a highlight of Spider-man comics (torn between Mary Jane and supervillainess the Black Cat) It is one of the few genuinely funny and original comedies to come out this year.

Not only is the title character a nightmare to be in a relationship with but the greatest nightmare of all to be out of a relationship with afterward. Thurman has been consistently a terrific performer after she learned how to act which she did quite awhile after movies like JENNIFER 8 and FINAL ANALYSIS ( "I wish that there was some way we could help Heather!"). Here she is just having fun I guess pretending Wilson is her ex-Ethan Hawke (or perhaps another ex like Gary Oldman).

The Brothers Wilson (Luke and Owen) are almost interchangeable to me. But Luke is, at times, the more pensive of the two. Since I dislike him it is fun to watch Thurman get payback on him.

Eddie Izzard's supporting role as the supervillain Professor Bedlam is as over-the-top as any Izzard performance. Izzard was not ever funny as a stand-up comic and he is not funny here either.

Wait for the DVD or see it in a second-run theatre. The premise really is intriguing and funny and there are some really funny scenes but it isn't worth seeing in the theatre at theatre prices.
