How to become a better person

If you ever consider how to become a better person, it means that you are looking beyond your self fulfillment and are thinking of how you affect the world around you. The very act of having this thought means that you are already not an inconsiderate person, who is motivated merely by your own needs.

Becoming a better person requires that you realize how your behavior produces certain results. If you consider the results to be negative, then the behavior is ripe for change in order for you to become a better person.

In this way, you are measuring the quantity, and quality, of the concept of what is 'better' against yourself, instead of comparing yourself to others. If you did compare yourself to others, rather than looking at your own behavior, then becoming a better person would be a far harder task.

This is because how each person performs may depend largely on their own talents and abilities. It is possible that some other individuals will be ahead of you when it comes to who is more skilled or moral, and that others may be behind you. Therefore it is in your own direction that you need to apply your focus.

It is also important, if you are to achieve good results in your endeavor of becoming a better person, that you set reachable goals. To aspire to become great may seem positive, but may take so much time that you give up, way before reaching your goal. But to aspire to be good first instead, will set you on the right road to becoming who you want to be.

How you interpret the word better will have an affect on what you actually pursue. You may consider becoming better to mean that you become more knowledgeable and skilled. Or you may consider becoming better to mean that you become kinder and more understanding of others.

Whether you consider becoming better to mean to become more moral, or more successful, setting reachable goals and sticking to them vigorously is more liable to help you to achieve results than pushing for the impossible.

By making a chart to plot your course of action, or keeping a journal or notebook, you can keep an eye on your progress and evaluate how well you are doing. A written record of your aims can also help you to focus your task and to realize just how far you progress.

If becoming better means to you that you alter a certain behavior then you can enlist family and friends to give you encouragement and to remind you, should you stray from your chosen path, to get back on it.
