Movie reviews: The Invisible

The Invisible is a film released in 2007 starring Justin Chatwin and Margarita Levieva. It chronicles the events following a violent teen murder. Or is it murder? The main character, played by Justin Chatwin, is a rich teenager just graduating from high school. He is as cool, calm, and collected as they come and he feels that he is popular but he feels unloved since the death of his father, years before. He rebels against the grand plans his mother has for him and buys a plane ticket to London where he will most likely attend a London art school in a writing course. He celebrates this escape plan with his best friend, then hears about a party. After visiting a character whom we assume must be a girlfriend of some kind at the party, he inexplicably gives up his plane ticket to her and walks home. Gangsters from his school drive after him, beat him up and the ringleader, a girl (Margarita Levieva), accidentally "kills" him, and they drop his body into a culvert in the forest. Chatwin's character walks around, invisible to all those around him. Is he dead? No, he is only half alive. Yes, that's right. So he can't be heard by anyone around him, except for the occasional yell that characters hear inexplicably. The rest of the movie is his journey around the city looking for clues as to why the characters of the movie act as they do. He also hopes for them to find his body before he other half of him dies in the culvert.

Quite frankly, this movie is a mess. The attempted point of the movie, I believe, is supposed to be that everyone is far more complex than they appear to be on the surface, and that everyone is special in some way. They director, David S. Goyer, falls somewhat short of this. None of the characters are likable in the slightest, which certainly does not help the story. Chatwin's spoiled brat is just a rich kid used to getting his own way. The audience is supposed to relate to him because he just wants his mother to love him. Well, he eventually finds out through use of his new peeping tom abilities that his mother does love him very much, and that he was selfish not to think so. Does this change his character? Is he still selfish? Let a scene from the movie answer that for you: As his body lies there dying, a girl who he thought was just a crook is actually a kind person who cares about her little brother. She obviously deserves to live in some way. It is expected that he will sacrifice himself to let her live to take care of her brother. Does
