The US controversy of immigration

Illegal immigration isn't something that was sprung on America like an act of terrorism. The United States Government has kept the borders open and porous for their own reasons. The government decided to allow more than 20 million people to enter the United States illegally over a period of years. Regulators are fully aware of Ellis Island and the rules that applied to the millions of immigrants entering the country (legally) back then. We elect and pay politicians for their mastery of the laws and understanding of the history of America.

Why was this major issue never open to vote? As the government attempts to appease opponents of illegal immigration by proposing to build a fence around our borders, they know it should really be a (trench), and not a fence. A trench cannot be scaled, cut through, blasted apart or torn down. Better yet, the very act of digging it-is something that illegals can be forced to assist with, as just punishment for trespassing on American soil.

I'm not suggesting that we fill the trenches with alligators and snakes, but only that it be dug deep enough so that it would be impossible to cross. We never hear of such a proposal because it would close the borders for once and for all.

The fact that day-laborers, huddled together on a corner, are not all picked for work on any given day, gives rise to another very serious problem. Realistically, those not chosen for work that day, may have literally been down to their last dime, the night before. Now what?

How many days can they afford to be without work before they will be forced to commit crimes in order to have money to pay for food and shelter? This reality is inherent in crime statistics everywhere throughout the country. This serious problem cannot be ignored. Police departments that handle these on-going crimes are also aware of the reasons the crimes are committed.

I strongly doubt that any significant amount of immigrants are willing to return to their native lands until they have successfully (wire transferred) enough American dollars back home. By the way, when they send money back home, much of it represents the tax money they never paid here, and also the money saved through free community services such as medical care, etc.

Before these people came here, Americans managed to handle each and every type of job that these people are now doing. The proof is in the fact that Americans train and supervise them and (not the other way around). The Minimum wage was created for Americans and not for illegal aliens. In fact, most illegal aliens working in the construction trades in the northeast and possibly elsewhere, will not accept the low American (minimum wage).

After working in America for just a year or so, many receive a wage of $10 to $15+ per hour, (all cash) no taxes deducted. Most also receive free lunch. Since they cannot get a driver's license, they are most-often chauffeured around. The longer they are here, the more money they command and are paid. They use the principle of supply and demand to their full advantage.

After all, if they monopolize an industry such as construction, who else is available to do the work? The Government has proposed to reward illegals who have been here for ten years or more with phased-in citizenship; yet this is the very segment that has beat the tax system for the longest amount of time.

Many advertised positions for construction workers now mandate that American applicants speak at least some Spanish. As such, this discourages young Americans from entering the trades since they would now be the minority. But this would be one minority that the IRS would hold accountable for paying taxes.
