Selecting a PR firm is easy. Selecting the right PR firm may be the most important and most difficult decision you'll ever make. Public Relations is difficult to manage well and yet critical to your success, often. Their decisions can make or break a company. So, how do you pick one? Very carefully.
One of the most important things to do before even beginning the process is to know what and how you want to promote your company. Don't form an iron-clad, concrete, inflexible concept of who and what you are, but know yourself, your product, and what you want to accomplish; then be flexible, but don't lose your identity along the way.
Ideally, after doing considerable research, you can narrow the possibilities down to three potential firms. One large, well-established firm, one middle-sized, established, but looking to increase their market share, firm, and one new and aggressive firm. All things being equal, I'd picked the middle-sized firm, but the more aggressive approach might be better for you, or the well established firm may have the connections that will best serve your company and project.
After seeing their approach to how they want to promote your product, consult with those members of your staff for their opinions, deliberate with them and inside yourself, then go with your best instincts. It's just your reputation and future that hangs on your decision.
