John turned off the engine. Sat. Took in the atmosphere for what it was and waited for the light. It had flown right above the hood of his car, not six feet above, just minutes before. And what he saw swoop into the sky... He could not believe it.
But he wanted to. So he parked and waited. Listened to rock and roll oldies on low while he thought about childhood dreams. He thought he saw the UFO-dare he even call it that?-off in the distance but it might have just been a bright star. He waited.
...and watched the light.
He could not believe what he had seen but it had been real! Not on television or in the papers but right above his head, right by him. He waited. Thirty minutes later, he fell asleep.
It was the white light that woke him up. Blinding and painful, he opened his lids and for a few seconds could not see anything. Then the shape of the ship became clear and it was like some sort of dream. His heart pounded in his chest. There was a ramp lowering right in front of him...
What was this? Could this possibly want to meet him, little old John Mctierman from Cambridge, Alaska?
And what would he do? His hands went toward the wheel in a spasm. No way. Not this man. If they wanted him for their sick experiments...
Then he stopped. He thought of sleepless nights and wondering why, of a world stripped of wonder because of the moment he let it get away...
He turned off the engine. Got out of the car. Walked out to the ramp... and toward possibility.
