A Fiesta for Cinco De Mayo.
A Mexican theme party can be a lot of fun. Guests can come in costume, traditional Mexican garb, such as ponchos, and sombreros for the guys, and brightly shirts and blouses for the girls.
Giving an award for the best, or the most creative costume, can help encourage guests to go all out.
A buffet of traditional Mexican dishes is another great crowd pleaser.
Ideas for your Mexican buffet
-Set out pre-cooked chicken strips, in an electric skillet or crock pot.
-Have a second skillet or crock pot for seasoned, pre-cooked ground beef.
-Refried beans and cheese are a sure crowd pleaser. This will also help guests stretch the meats, making sure everyone gets enough.
-Arrange hard taco and tostada shells on a platter or tray.
-Offer soft tortillas, individually wrapped in brightly printed Mexican style napkins, or in a variety of festive colors such as yellow and red, symbols of a traditional Fiesta. Tie each with a brightly colored ribbon for an even more festive look.
-Set out a large bowl of Tortilla chips.
-Spanish rice, such as can be made from a mix, is another great buffet item.
-In individual, brightly colored plastic bowls place:
*shredded cheese
*diced onion
*diced tomatoes
*sour cream, topped off with a bit of cilantro for color
*guacamole
*diced avocado
*chopped pitted black olives
*hot or mild peppers, or both
-Offer an assortment of salsa's, green salsa, hot salsa, mild salsa etc.
Here is my favorite salsa recipe:
Pinapple Salsa
6 large, ripe tomatoes diced
1 medium onion, chopped
1 small can crushed pineapple
1/4 - 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, depending on taste
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl.
Refrigerate overnight, so flavors blend together.
LET'S TANGO
Create a festive atmosphere by playing some traditional Spanish dance music in the background.
Challenge guests to Tango, to Rumba, or to attempt the traditional Mexican Hat Dance.
Some activities guest may enjoy at your Cinco De Mayo Fiesta:
-The Limbo
-Take a whack at the pinata
-Traditional Mexican toys, such as the Balero, the trompo, and the Mexican Yo-Yo are great objects to keep lying around. Guests can try their skill at these traditional Mexican activities, keeping everyone occupied, and having a great time.
