Because natural sources of phosphate fertilizer are now depleted, most of our crops are now grown using artificial fertilizer. This is made by mining apatite. This mineral contains traces of uranium. Uranium is radioactive so artificial fertilizer is slightly radioactive. The experts said this is OK because there is so little of it. They were wrong. Chemical and physical processes have a way of concentrating radio-isotopes.
Polonium is one radioactive element created as uranium decays. On a warm day it tends to evaporate. If radioactive fertilizer is used to grow tobacco then polonium will condense on the underside of the tobacco leaves, and from there finds its way into the lungs of people who smoke tobacco. Polonium spits out alpha particles which do immense damage to the DNA in our cells. It is likely that this is the primary cause of lung cancer.
Many other forms of cancer increased suddenly after farmers started using radioactive fertilizer. Cancer has been described as the plague of the 20th century. Huge amounts of artificial fertilizer have now been spread across the landscape and much has found its way into the rivers and the sea. Yet most people are not aware of this situation because, like fossil fuels, commercial pressures have forced us to become dependent on a dangerous product.
They blame smokers for getting lung cancer. They blame bad diet for cancer of the esophagus, stomach, colon, bowel etc. It is likely the real blame should rest with the companies that sell radioactive fertilizer, the farmers who put radio-isotopes on their crops and governments who allow this to happen.
Nothing will change until more people become aware of the situation and start insisting on products that are grown with fertilizer from which the radio-isotopes have been removed. Alas, for many people this will happen too late.
