Understanding the relations between the UK and the European Union

There are 3 positions taken in the UK regarding the European Union. Eurosceptic, pro-European and somebody who wants to be in Europe, but not run by Europe.

I place myself in the Eurosceptic camp. This is because what was originally planned was a common market, today the UK is losing control of key areas of policy which one would associate with sovereignty. Politicians have avoided any referendum on the EU, simply because they know they will lose it.

The EU has control over our economy, the growth and stability pact is one area where the UK follows the European project. Matters for British courts are being decided more and more in a European Court. Political decisions are now made in line with European treaties.

France rejected a "European constitution" and it would have been rejected in the UK. Today, British politicians are trying to get this EU constitution without a referendum by calling it a treaty. We will end up without our national currency, replaced by the Euro.

I am not anti-European at all. I am pro-sovereignty and pro-democracy, both of which the EU is not.
