Depending on your circumstances, after being layed off, you may have to make a decision on whether or not you want to return to work for the company when and if they call you back to work. Many people who are layed off, end up finding an alternative job, while they are waiting for their employer to call them back to work. In some cases the job they find as an alternative job, ends up being just as good of a job or better than the job that they were layed off from, but there are still some things to consider, such as retirement, and pensions.
Another thing to consider is how they went about laying you off, and how you were treated based on your seniority, and other factors. I work on a part time basis for a company who recently told their employees that many of them would be layed off, and when it came down to it, they ended up firing over half of their employees and somehow escaped paying them their hard earned unemployment. A few months later they ended up getting another contract and started calling back most of the people that they fired, needless to say, there were only a few that returned.
Being layed off can be a devastating event in an individuals life especially if they are unable to claim unemployment benefits. The layed off individual may grow to resent the company for their reasoning behind the layoff, and may not want to return to such an uncaring company.
When deciding if you should return to a company that layed you off, weigh your options heavily to ensure that you are making the best possible choice for your career and your life. Be sure to ask questions regarding how stable your position will be, if you decide to return.
