Basil- has a multitude of uses. Why not have it. Everything from sauces to broiled lamb lends itself beautifully. Basil is commonly used in most cultures. Basil is easy to grow in pots. This brilliant garden herb will help deter houseflies. Experiment to find your preference may it be the bushy basil or the, purple basil. Basil has been used for medicinal purposes long before we arrived. Commonly used for stomach cramps, and insect stings.
Much like the flavor, the aroma of basil is strong and distinctive.

Cumin- is used a lot in Mexican, Middle Eastern and Indian cooking. It is a seed coming from white or pink flowers. Harvested like caraway seeds. Cumin can also be found as flavorings in liquors. The oils extracted from cumin seeds is used in many perfumes. Interestingly so, that same oil is also used in veterinary medicine.
The largest consumption of cumin could be chili. Other foods that pare well with cumin are pinto beans, curries, yogurts, lamb, beef, etc. Experiment with your herb pantry, find what works for you. Cumin is thought to aid in diarrhea, digestion and flatulence. Therefore this one can be shared with the medicinal herb pantry.

This is a good start for the new herbalist. Study all of the individual herbs. Please don't confine your studies for the most popular herbs and spices. Expand your horizons; research the wild herbs in your area as well.
