Fun facts about Cinco de Mayo

Fun facts about Cinco de Mayo? Fact: Facts aren't fun. Stories are fun. Observations can be fun. Pictures of me dancing on tabletops after too much tequila may be fun for some, but not for me.

On Cinco de Mayo, we celebrate the pride of our neighbors to the south, who have many reasons to be proud, but they eventually lost Puebla to the French, not on May the 5th, but later. I often compare Cinco de Mayo to "Remember the Alamo," where Texas lost to Maximilian's forces, but eventually won their independence. The Alamo was where Texans established their pride. Cinco de Mayo was where the citizens of Mexico established their pride. The Mexicans did win at Puebla, though, where Texas lost at the Alamo.

Fact: Maybe not a fun fact, but Cinco de Mayo is not a national holiday in Mexico.

Fact: There is not a worm in the bottom of tequila, but mescal does have agave worms in it, usually.

Fact: Gringos should never drink mescal. They should seldom drink tequila, but often do, especially during Cinco de Mayo.

Fact: Cazedores and Patron silver (not gold) are much better tequilas than Jose Cuervo.

Fact: Only sissies drink tequila with salt and lime or in margaritas with Triple Sec; gross!

Fact: Gringo was a term meant to be insulting, in its origins, used in reference to Americans who were immigrating into Mexican territories. I probably use the word too often, but I am certainly not Mexican and mean no disrespect to anyone when I use it in reference to myself. I would never call anyone else a gringo. "Gringa" is the feminine form of the word "gringo."

I think that's enough facts. Now, go have some fun. It's Cinco de Mayo, when everyone is Mexican, even gringos and gringas.
