In some cases travel insurance can be a waste of money if you don't make a long trip and you have coverage on the same way by credit cards or you have another kind of insurance with the same possibilities to protect you during your travel.
It is waste of money to pay twice for the same coverage.
Many credit cards gives you different kind of coverage and it is important to check these before you decide to take travel insurance. When your trip is not far in most cases your health insurance will cover you. Some of these health policies covers also the expenses abroad. There are even credit cards who will cover you in case of accidental death.
Some airplanes offer you a coverage by loss of your luggage. It has no sense to take a travel insurance for the same thing.
In many cases travel insurance is not a waste of money but it is important to check which coverage you already have and take only travel insurance when there is a risk that isn't covered in other insurances that you already have.
